I read a lot. As I read, I highlight passages, take notes, ask questions and make comments in the margins of the pages. I do this in every non-fiction book that I read. Sometimes though, there are books that I find to be particularly useful in my work as school leader. With those books, I type up my notes for use during book studies and discussion groups.
The Cain Notes that I am sharing on this site are not commercial documents. Instead, they represent my endorsement of powerful books that I believe can be useful to every school leader. Therefore, it is my strong recommendation that you buy and read the book. Keep in mind, these notes are based on what I think is important from the book. As such, they should never be considered a replacement for the book.
Check this page periodically, as I will continue to add book notes from my ever growing collection. The current roster of notes include:
Made to Stick, by Chip and Dan Heath (Recently Added!)
- An easy to read,"how to," book on creating messages that stick with the listener. An excellent resource for educators at any level. Read this book before you begin revising your class lessons and/or staff trainings.
Corp Business, by David H. Freedman
- A must read for any aspiring or current school leader. It is the first book that all new assistant principals should read once they are hired.
Environments for Learning, by Eric Jensen
- The fact that we can either accelerate or decelerate learning based on the environment in which we place the learner is becoming common knowledge. This book provides a great starting point as you begin to purposely manipulate instructional settings to improve student performance.
Who Moved My Cheese, by Spencer Johnson, M.D.
- A modern classic. A simple, yet powerful fable on how to deal with and manage change.
